Disposable Wives in India
Marriage is the biggest turning point in the life of a woman in India. Most Indian families believe that women are born for forming a family, look after her husband and their children. They are born and bought up in such a concept. Though the mentality of people is changing slowly, most Indians are guided by the same belief and concept. Even though the women spent lots of years for education, most of them stop it after their marriage and prefer to stay at home. Dowry is the other curse in India.
But, now the Indian women have become the toy in the hands of some British men. They visit India and lure the families of some beautiful, wealthy women and marry them. But, after the marriage and taking big sum of money as dowry, they escape from India by leaving their wives. They also abuse these disposable wives physically before leaving their native. Some of such husbands from UK bring these wives to the UK temporarily, but later, they sent them back to India by taking back even their passport.
But most of such women are not ready to disclose these facts. But, the Academics at the University of Lincoln revealed that they could find 57 such women in India.
The Biggest, Dream Weddings….
Just like the other girls in India, Sunita (not her real name) also dreamed big about her marriage. Just like her dream, her marriage was also a grand one. She was from the Punjab region. Her family invited hundreds of guests for the marriage. She looked very beautiful in red dress. The marriage was really great.
But, her new husband stayed with her family in India for nearly one month soon after the marriage. Then, he returned to his home in the UK. She waited for her husband. She thought that he will come back soon and will take her to his home, but he did not come back. Whenever she contacted her husband, she used to ask when he will come back. But, he always replied, ‘Not Now’.
He also demanded lots of money from her. She game him money. Eventually, Sunita’s husband stopped talking to her on the phone. Since then, she never sees him. Later, she came to know that he already has wife in the UK.
Men are not only coming from the UK, but from the US, Canada and other nations as well. Dr Sundari Anitha at the University of Lincoln spoke to many such women from Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, etc. Some women paid as much as £ 25,000 in dowry, though they were also abandoned by their husbands. Some of them have a child too. They were also treated as domestic slaves in the house of in-laws. According to the Indian custom, a woman is abandoned by her husband, her life is ruined. The social impact of such women is also very hard. So, the sisters of such women are also facing difficulties to get married.
It is like a business of such men. The British state is also concerned about such men. The government is not ready to tolerate abuse through marriage or any other relationships. This is a kind of modern slavery. The British government is looking into this matter carefully and taking action to prevent such abuses and support victims.
